Ganesh Mahato Chaudhary is a nineteen-year-old guy from Nepal. He is volunteering here in Finland for a year. He has a younger sister who is fourteen. In his spare time he plays football, volleyball and reads books.
Ganesh´s home country Nepal is located in South Asia between China and India. Its official language is Nepali. 30 986 975 people live there. Eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest, are located in Nepal.
We
interviewed Ganesh about all kinds of things. One of those things was
Finland. Ganesh told us that this is his first time seeing snow although
there is snow on the Himalaya mountains. He likes snow and has already built a snowman. He remembered that they put a little hat on the snowman.
When asked about Finnish people, Ganesh tells
us that Finns seem shy. That's also what he was told before travelling
here. He thinks that Finnish food is okay although it could use a bit
more seasoning – the food in Nepal is really spicy. "There's a lot of chilli", he tells us. Nepalian food usually consists of rice, lentils, vegetables, chicken and sometimes buffalo.
Obviously, there are other differences between Finland and Nepal. For example in Nepal the houses are hardly ever made of wood. They are usually made of brick, cement and concrete. Also there is a different religion (Hinduism) in Nepal. About 81% of the population are Hindu.
But why is Ganesh here? He told us that he is here to do some voluntary work. He wanted to meet new people and explore a foreign culture. He said he chose Finland because it is so different here compared to Nepal. He also wanted to see snow. Ganesh is interested in
volunteering because he truly likes helping others and wants to share
his talents and time with other people. He also enjoys meeting new
people from various countries and with different backgrounds. Ganesh told us that he would recommend voluntary work for others. He said doing volunteering brings a lot of opportunities to learn something new and a chance to acquire a new skill. He says that volunteering is a part of every human being and we are designed to help each other.
